A Chinook Salmon turned up in a sighting logged at Monterey Bay on iNaturalist, one of only 9 sightings of the fish in these waters in the past year. Most divers go a whole season without one; this one passed on a Monday.
The sea under it was the biggest of the week at NDBC 46042, running 8.4 ft on average against 4.5 ft on the flattest day. The dominant period at NDBC 46042 peaked at 21 seconds, long clean energy from weather nobody here saw.
Then the surface quit. From about 7:40 PM the wind at NDBC 46042 held under 5 kt for 6 hours, glass on a bay that rarely hands it out.
The salmon kept going. Nobody logged where. The glass is gone too: the National Weather Service said seas would keep building through Wednesday morning, with the breeze freshening out of the southwest ahead of a cold front. That calm was good for one night. The notice came one day late.
